There are so many things we set out to achieve in a day. Be it on a personal front, professionally, or in our social lives. As the number of items on our to-do-list increase, the way we go about our day becomes increasingly important. Naturally, balance is essential. Being one of the forerunning staffing companies and recruitment agencies, we have the privilege of interacting with a variety of organizations as well as dynamic professionals across industries to get invaluable insights from them. Based on our experience and their insights, we have curated a list of tips & tricks that help increase productivity at work. Being job consultants, we decided to stick to our expertise but a lot of these practices prove effective across all walks of life.
1. Time is Money (almost)
In order to make the most use of your time; you first need to understand how much time you are spending on your tasks at hand. You can find suitable apps or do it yourself too, but track how much time you are spending on specific tasks and limit the time accordingly.
2. Breaks are necessary
A break can hamper your flow of work. However, scheduled breaks can actually help you recharge just the right amount. We might take pride in our abilities to work for a considerable duration of time but even the sharpest minds see a decline in performance when exerted for long periods of time. Take short breaks at regular intervals to maintain effective levels of concentration through your work day as opposed to straining yourself and burning out.
3. You are your own boss
In line with understanding your productivity and setting a timetable for yourself, it is helpful to try and manage yourself as an employee. Certain levels of pressure can fuel productivity and who better to be answerable to than yourself. If there are no strict deadlines to begin with, break your job down to individual tasks or goals and set a timeline to achieve each of them. Being a leading consultancy in the education sector, we often find it fascinating how task management skills instilled at a younger age can lead to a world of difference when they grow up to become productive (or unproductive) professionals. However, it is never too late. Quite a few candidates we interacted with told us how they took on a lot of pressure without delivering on it but a few of the right suggestions put them on the express track of productivity.
4. Multitasking? No, no, and no.
Handling two more tasks simultaneously is often conceived as an important and enviable skill to have. In reality, multitasking does not enhance efficiency but in turn might work towards reducing it. You may think you are knocking down your to-do list at impressive speeds but you are actually not doing any of them properly. Be it mundane, everyday tasks or high-concentration activities, our efficiency rate improves substantially if we are focusing on the job at hand.
5. Time is money, again
With expanding cities, never-ending traffic jams, and overall longer commutes – it often feels like a considerable amount of time is lost coming to and leaving from work. So why waste it? Set aside a few tasks that are possible to do on your commute. This is not binding but just a suggestion to optimize your time. You could use your travel time to respond to emails, carry out some research, or do some brainstorming to refresh you for work.
6. Do not waste time on ‘perfection’
Now we do not mean that one should not aim for perfection in their work. However, it is essential to understand that if we put our best into the task at hand, that is the most realistic form of perfection one can attain. Instead of misallocating time in order to create the ‘perfect’ output, do the best you can, and if at all you feel dissatisfied, you can come back to improve on it once you have sorted out other work as well.
7. Keep your eyes on the prize
To enhance your productivity, you should give yourself windows to work in. While you set deadlines for yourself and take appropriate breaks, it is imperative you are focused when you are actually working. To whatever extent you can, keep distractions at bay. A small interruption can cause you to restart and renew your approach. Understand the possible distractions you might face and work smartly towards minimizing them. These were a few helpful ways one can improve productivity at work. It is important to introspect as well as study your work atmosphere to understand how these pieces of advice will work perfectly for you. After all, it is all about working smart and not working hard in order to attain your personal, professional, and organizational goals.
